About

Hi there! I’m so excited to meet you. My name is Tessa, I’m a Pisces, and I’m the creator of Oat Milk Miel—a slow travel blog. For the past several years, I’ve been going on crazy, extended adventures around the world with my little family. Oat Milk Miel is a space where I hope to share guides, itineraries, and helpful tidbits I’ve learned along the way to empower you on your travels.

If you’re at all wondering about my background, I’m a twenty-something with a degree in Geography, a Master’s in Sustainable Destination Management, and close to five years of professional experience in the Destination Management, Tour Operator, and Destination Marketing space. Basically, I’m in so deep with tourism that I have a true love-hate relationship with it.

I’m currently based out of east Tennessee, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, working a remote day job, trying to figure out how to raise a tiny human, and how to balance a love for home with an undying desire to go somewhere new. I’m married to an artist, have a scruffy pup, and have recently acquired a five-year-old bonsai tree (unrelated, but it feels noteworthy?)

If you choose to stick around, or follow me on social media, you’re bound to learn more about my incredibly dysfunctional, somewhat reserved, and largely hopeful disposition.

But for now, thank you for being here.

P.S. I’m a die-hard when it comes to the Oxford comma, so if you can’t cope, this may not be the blog for you…

Those first three years of a child’s life are some of the most important and the perfect time to introduce your little gremlin to the open road. Experts claims that travel “can significantly boost development…expand a kid’s world, making them more empathetic toward cultural differences and helping them adapt to changing situations.” It’s also pure magic to get to see them discover new places and find a whole new world through their little eyes. 🌎

What are your primary expenses when you travel? Lo What are your primary expenses when you travel? Lodging, transportation, activities, and food & drink.

✨ When you slow down and stay awhile, you’re more likely to find hotels or rentals that offer extended stay discounts, often shaving off hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

✨ You’ll also relieve yourself of the pressure to see it all and do it all in sprint mode, meaning you can take the time to do your research and spend your dollars more intentionally when it comes to activities and attractions. (This also drastically reduces your impact on the host community…)

✨ You’ll be able to take advantage of the more cost-efficient opportunity to cook and explore local cuisine at the market or grocery store, rather than just in the restaurant setting.

✨ You can pace yourself with transportation costs by reducing the urgent need to get from A to B. Breathe, pause, and take a chance with public transportation first.

One of my favorite parts about slow travel is that One of my favorite parts about slow travel is that it opens up more space to stop along the way and happen upon places that feel like pure magic. We were headed pack to Porto from Peneda-Gerês National Park and needed to make a pit stop to feed Theodore. What was supposed to be a quick in and out operation turning into us scooting into a parking spot in a tiny town square that materialized out of thin air around a curve in a windy mountain road, enjoying a cappuccino at a cafe while watching a group of regulars enjoy a (rather heated) game of chess while they smoked, grabbing some apples from the elderly lady running a fruit stand on the corner, and stumbling into a church courtyard-turned-orchard.
